Abstract

Within the last ten years, a number of emerging Reggae ›artistes‹ from Jamaica such as Chronixx, Protoje or Jah9, who are understood as part of the ›Reggae Revival‹ movement, made their way into the music charts and line-ups of popular festivals worldwide. Mainly based on field research conducted in Jamaica and Germany in 2018, this study focuses on the local emergence of the Jamaican Reggae Revival, its establishment and identity; thereby particularly highlighting the roles of local institutions and infrastructures (e.g. training centers, universities, venues, labels, and media) as well as the movement's appearance within the international music labor market. Furthermore, the article is tied to recent ethnomusicological publications featuring Jamaican popular music cultures and definitions of music revivals, as the Reggae Revival is regarded a contemporary form of popular music culture within the context of local and global references.
