Kalevala Metal – Die Musik der Band Amorphis und ihr Bezug zum finnischen National-Epos

Abstract

This paper examines the music and lyrics of the Finnish extreme metal band Amorphis. The musical analysis locates Amorphis' music within the field of extreme metal while demonstrating a development that occurs in compositional techniques such as the breakdown, formal structures, and melodic features, influenced by different kinds of metal and other popular music. The band's different ways of adapting the Finnish national epic Kalevala as the basis for most of their lyrics as well as the artistic intentions of Amorphis are shown by comparing various albums from their discography.
